Yellow Cab proud to be a sponsor in
“Giving Thanks Through Sharing at Thanksgiving”

Yellow Cab was a proud sponsor in the Benevolent Brotherhood of San Antonio’s annual “Giving Thanks Through Sharing at Thanksgiving.” Each year this organization provides free turkeys to financially challenged families near the inner city area.  This year the distribution site was at The Pig Stand on Broadway.  Yellow Cab’s participation included giving away $25 HEB gift certificates to each turkey recipient, to help with the cost of side dishes.

Elementary school students learn about
Yellow Cab at Careers on Wheels Day

Graebner and Beacon Hill Elementary Schools observed “Careers on Wheels” Day in November.  Members of various professions were invited to talk to the first through fifth graders about their jobs and answered the children’s questions. George Alva, an independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab, proudly showed his Yellow Cab #1 to the children and addressed his career with the students.

Yellow Cab partners with TxDOT to promote safe alternatives to DWI

a vehicle specially wrapped so that the front half looks like a police cruiser and the back half looks like a Yellow Cab

Yellow Cab played an integral part in the 2009 Labor Day “Drink, Drive, Go to Jail” campaign.  The new promotion reminds the public that the safe alternative to driving while intoxicated is to call a taxicab. TxDOT joined forces with the Bexar County Sheriffs Office, San Antonio Police Department, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, and Mothers Against Drunk Driving.  The annual campaign’s mission is to educate motorists about the options to get home safely if they’ve been drinking and to remind the public that during certain times of the year, police departments increase their already intense focus on drivers who are intoxicated.

A press conference included a presentation by independent contractor taxi driver Jim Rowell, who announced that Yellow Cab donated space on 25 taxi billboards to help publicize the program. Using the slogan “Choose your ride,” the campaign features a clever eye-catching image: a vehicle specially wrapped so that the front half looks like a police cruiser and the back half looks like a Yellow Cab. The SAPD police cruiser and the Sheriff’s Department patrol car, wrapped in their unique half law authority / half taxi, were the highlight of the event!

Yellow Cab aids Rock’n’Rollers

This city’s inaugural Rock’n’Roll marathon was held on Sunday, November 16. More than 30,000 runners were registered to take part in the half or full race. Organizers enlisted Yellow Cab’s help in providing a relief vehicle to pick up runners who became injured or too exhausted to continue. Our cab trailed the end of the race for almost eight hours until the final runner crossed the finish line. When not transporting fallen runners to the nearest first aid station, our service representative was providing water to both runners and on-duty police officers.

South Texas Blood and Tissue Center Blood Drive onsite at GSATC

On Thursday, May 1, GSATC hosted its first annual blood drive in partnership with South Texas Blood and Tissue Center. This agency is responsible for collecting and providing blood to over 100 hospitals and clinics in 43 Texas counties. Attendants were very pleased with our participation as 29 employees were joined by 35 independent contractor drivers in volunteering for this worthwhile cause. Donors were rewarded with a t-shirt and refreshments. GSATC is very proud of these individuals who gave their time and blood for those in need.

Model T Show

On Saturday and Sunday, May 17&18, GSATC responded to a personalized request to display our antique in the Texas Transportation Museum and “Ford T’s of Texas” car show. Many spectators enjoyed the fair weather to view the approximately 45 antiques on display and during their short road trip down Broadway.

Battle of Flowers Parade

For the 7th consecutive year the Yellow Cab antique taxi was featured in the Battle of Flowers parade. This year we again had the privilege of transporting Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolfe. He is pictured here with his granddaughters along with General Looney, Base Commander of Randolph AFB.

Yellow Cab takes part in TxDOT Holiday Safety Campaign

In the company of three elite U.S. Air Force paratroopers, Santa Claus donned a parachute and jumped out of a plane on December 4, 2007 in a high-flying effort to remind Texans not to drink and drive during the holiday season. State and local safety advocates called on the man of the hour to launch TxDOT’s annual four-week drunk driving prevention campaign. TxDOT is partnering with Lackland Air Force Base and other active military installations to encourage Texans to plan ahead and designate a sober driver, or call a taxicab, when their celebrations include alcohol.

Three Yellow Cabs were there to shuttle Santa and his crew away from the jump site. Additionally, GSATC donated sign space on a number of taxicabs to spread the safety message, both in English and in Spanish.

Independent contractor drivers and employees volunteer
for Meals on Wheels on Thanksgiving

Once again, GSATC employees and independent contractor drivers took time out of their Thanksgiving holiday to deliver meals to those less fortunate. Many of our poor and elderly rely on Meals on Wheels for their only hot meal of the day, and Thanksgiving Day creates an exceptional need for volunteers. We greatly appreciate the efforts of these selfless individuals who thought of others first on this special day.

Yellow Cab of San Antonio recently announced the recipients of its second annual scholarship awards. The five $1,500 scholarship awards may be used for college or technical school training and areawarded to the children of independent contractor drivers at Yellow Cab and Yellow Cab employees. The drivers and employees themselves are also eligible. As part of the application process, the candidate writes an essay entitled “Why this scholarship is important to me.” Applications are judged based on essays, transcripts and financial needs. Pictured above, left to right: recipients Rachel Alva, Evelene Long, Anthony Elizondo, Crystal Medelez, and Michelle Barnard.

Mother's Day Meals on Wheels Volunteers

Twenty-three GSATC employees and independent contractor drivers sacrificed part of their Mother’s Day Sunday to participate in the Meals on Wheels delivery of hot meals, flowers, and toiletries to those less fortunate. Meals on Wheels delivers dinners daily in their own fleet of trucks but needs the help of volunteers to meet the demand on peak days such as this one. Participating drivers reported that the meal recipients were very appreciative of their service. Many of these generous individuals volunteer repeatedly, giving of their time on both Mother’s Day and Thanksgiving. The Company is proud of these men and women who make life a little more enjoyable for those in need.

Volunteers, drivers, employees, friends and children congregated in a nearby parking lot, enjoying morning coffee and donuts, prior to parading to the Meals on Wheels pick-up site.

Yellow Cab Antique Taxi leads Blue Knights parade

The Blue Knights Motorcycle Club held its annual ride to benefit the Mission Road Developmental Center. On December 16, 2006 the police-escorted parade was led by our own antique taxi which was followed by several vintage cars and over 200 motorcycles. The children at the center were given their gifts by the traditional “Red” Santa, SAPD’s “Blue” Santa (who arrived by helicopter) and “Gray” Santa (aka George Alva). Notable guests included Judge Peter Sakai, former mayor Howard Peak, McGruff the Crime Dog and newly appointed police chief, William McManus. Drivers donate their time to Kids-N-Need Shopping Spree

Thirteen Yellow Cab drivers participated in the Kids-N-Need Shopping Spree held December 5, 2006. Transportation to the annual event was co-sponsored by the Center For Healthcare Services, the San Antonio Police Officer’s Association and Yellow Cab. Caring independent contractor drivers provided round-trip transportation to the Super Target Store for twenty-two families. Santa and Mrs. Claus arrived in the antique taxi.

Drivers donate Thanksgiving services

On Thanksgiving morning 28 selfless Yellow Cab and TowneCar independent contractor drivers gave up part of their holiday time to help out those in need. Many of our elder citizens are homebound and rely on these good Samaritans to delivery hot, tasty turkey dinners from Meals on Wheels, a community outreach program that delivers daily nutritious meals to the needy. Later that same day, other generous drivers gave of their time to transport folks to and from the annual Raul Jimenez Thanksgiving dinner at the Convention Center. The Company commends each of these individuals for giving back to the community and enhancing the image of Greater San Antonio Transportation Co.

Yellow Cab awards $7,500 in scholarships

Five current or prospective college students earned $1,500 scholarships towards their continuing education by submitting the best essays stating why the scholarship would be important to them. This was the first such award that will be made available annually to qualifying drivers, employees, and their children.

This year’s winners include: driver Juan Carlos Martinez who attends UTSA; dispatcher Evelene Long, who attends SAC; Mariaolinka Chaplin, who attends OLLU and is the daughter of driver Ralph Chaplin; Krystal Campbell, who attends Trinity University and is the daughter of driver Jack Campbell; and Crystal Medelez, who attends Southwest Texas State and is the daughter of driver Johnny Medelez.

Congratulations to these deserving students. We wish them success and encourage them to re-apply for additional financial aid next year.

Yellow Cab sponsors Fiesta Safe Program

Yellow Cab joined an impressive list of sponsors of the Fiesta Safe program that promotes safe, sober driving during the annual Fiesta celebration. The Company donated 25 taxi signback ads to get this important message out to the community. The annual 10-day Fiesta celebration often results in an exceptional number of alcohol related incidents occurring when celebrants over-indulge with spirited drinks. Fiesta Safe encourages the use of designated drivers, public transportation, and taxicabs.

Cabbies assist “Meals on Wheels” on Mothers Day

Twenty-five Yellow Cab and TowneCar drivers were among the 250 volunteers delivering 1,500 turkey dinners to homebound seniors in our community on Mothers Day. These recipients are often economically challenged, homebound, physically impaired, frail, and lack mobility. They can be lonely, isolated and nutritionally at risk. Along with a hot meal, the recipients were given flowers and Mothers Day cards hand made by local girl scouts.

The participating ladies and gentlemen from our fleet gave up several hours of their special day to nourish and enrich the lives of the county’s disadvantaged. The Company expresses their gratitude for this selfless service.

Golfing for a good cause

On June 2 GSATC sponsored 4 entrants in the annual San Antonio Tourism Council Golf Tournament, held a Silverhorn Golf Club of Texas. Proceeds support research programs benefiting the Tourism Industry. Shown here are Rob Grajeda, treasurer of the San Antonio Police Officers Association; Raymond Turner, President of Texas Taxi, Inc.; Yellow Cab driver Paul Lex; and Jim Peconga, manager of Sunset Station.

On September 2, 2005, a vanload of donated items was delivered to Girls & Boys Town of San Antonio. This home is hosting 50 displaced youths from Father Flannigan’s Home in New Orleans. Donated items included food, toiletries and gently used clothes, games, linens, etc.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) used Yellow Checker in San Antonio as its test market to evaluate a new program to provide taxi rides home to overserved individuals. MADD provided a supply of “Rounds”, silver dollar sized tokens, to a dozen local taverns and restaurants. These participating establishments then gave two rounds to each patron who appeared too intoxicated to safely drive home. The patron presented one round to the taxi driver who drove him home, and the second round to the taxi driver who took him back to his car the following day. The test period began on Easter weekend and lasted six weeks. MADD was extremely pleased with the results of the test and is considering implementing the program nationwide. MADD and Yellow Cab provided over a hundred trips under this program making the streets of San Antonio much safer. MADD representatives were impressed with how smoothly this program operated and thanked the employees and independent contractor drivers for their cooperation. 05/05

A dozen 3-year-olds enjoyed an up close look at a real taxicab as part of National Transportation Month. University Presbyterian Learning Center teachers, Cindy Garcia and Nelly Flores invited Yellow Cab to participate in this annual event. The children, who call themselves the Dotty Dalmatians, climbed and played in the taxi while asking driver George Alva many questions about the equipment and his job. The kids were really excited especially when our communications staff sent them a special greeting over the computer terminal. 04/05

GSATC employees and drivers hosted a Christmas party for the 66 elderly residents of Salado Creek Retirement Home. Each resident was presented with a bag full of goodies. All of the attendees seemed to enjoy the yuletide attention. Each of the volunteers are to be commended for the generosity of their time and efforts. Many elderly folks feel particularly lonely during this season. Hopefully this made some of their holidays a little brighter. 12/18/04

A dozen generous Yellow Checker and TowneCar drivers took part in the 25th annual “Kids in Need Shopping Spree” . This year’s event was hosted by the San Antonio Police Officers Association and the Center for Health Care Services, along with host retailer, Super Target, located at Bandera and Loop 1604.
