Juan Carlos Martinez became an independent contractor taxi driver at Yellow Cab two years ago. When the UTSA computer science major is not driving or studying, he is enjoying his other two passions: playing soccer and kickboxing. He hopes that his degree will enable him to work overseas, especially in the area of computer security.
Evelene Long began working in Yellow Cab Communications Department when the company began operations in 1999. She has earned an associate’s degree and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in education. Evelene hopes to teach second graders.
Mariaolinka Chaplin, daughter of Yellow Cab independent contractor taxi driver Ralph Chaplin, attends Our Lady of the Lake, where she takes a full class load and works part time in the school’s TV studio. She aspires to become a news reporter and, eventually, to become an international correspondent. She hopes to produce her own movies.
Krystal Campbell, daughter of Yellow Cab independent contractor taxi driver Jack Campbell, is a senior at Trinity University. She will graduate next year with a bachelor’s degree in music education. She plans to teach at a local, low-income middle school. When not studying, Krystal enjoys singing alongside her fiancé in their Texas-country band, Small Town Habit.
Crystal Medelez, daughter of Yellow Cab independent contractor taxi driver Johnny Medelez, is a senior at Texas State, majoring in social services. She works at Curves Fitness Center. Her career goal is to work for Child Protective Services. Crystal will be the first person in her family to graduate from college.
To be eligible, the individual or at least one member of his/her immediate family must be an employee or independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab. The student applicants also wrote an essay on why the scholarship is important to them and provided their transcripts. The applicants were judged based on their essay entries and transcripts as well as their financial needs.
