Awards $7,500 in Scholarships
Scholarships Awarded To Help Students Realize Their Dreams
San Antonio, TX (July 3, 2007) Yellow Cab, San Antonio’s only computer-dispatched taxi fleet, has announced the recipients of the 2nd annual company scholarship award. The five $1,500 scholarship awards may be used for college or technical school training and areawarded to the children of independent contractor drivers at Yellow Cab and Yellow Cab employees. The drivers and employees themselves are also eligible. As part of the application process, the candidate writes an essay entitled “Why this scholarship is important to me.” Applications are judged based on essays, transcripts and financial needs.

“The Company takes great pride in giving back to the community,” said Mike Barnard, President of Yellow Cab San Antonio. "We are pleased to support the recipients in their efforts to further their education and achieve their aspirations. Here is a brief look this year’s recipients:
Crystal Medelez is the daughter of Yellow Cab independent contractor driver Johnny Medelez. This is the second time Crystal has received a Yellow Cab San Antonio scholarship. She will soon graduate from Texas State University and plans to pursue her master’s degree in social work. She currently works with Child Protective Services.
Anthony Elizondo is a long-time independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab. He is majoring in information systems at Northwest Vista College. His ambition is to work in the IT department at a major corporation.
Rachel Alva is married to George Alva, who has been an independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab since 1999. She is a mortuary science major at San Antonio College.
Evelene Long, who received a Yellow Cab scholarship last year, has been a Yellow Cab dispatcher for many years. She is entering her junior year at UTSA as an education major. Evelene hopes that she will soon be teaching youngsters in the kindergarten through fourth grade level.
Michelle Barnard, daughter of former GM Mike Barnard, recently graduated from Clark High School. She plans to enter Northwest Vista College in the fall with ambitions of earning a degree in interior design.
