Savvy cabbie invests in hybrid to keep gas costs low
SAN ANTONIO (December 5, 2005)--Paul Lex, tired of the skyrocketing price of gasoline, decided to invest in newer technology that could cut his fuel expense in half. As an independent contractor driver at Yellow Cab, Lex is a small business owner. Fuel for his taxi is a major operating expense. So, after comparing the various hybrid models on the market, he ordered a 2005 Toyota Prius with Hybrid Synergy Drive. The Prius is the first hybrid in the Yellow Cab fleet.
The Prius combines an efficient gas engine with an emissions-free electric motor to produce an ideal combination of fuel efficiency, environmental sensitivity and performance. The vehicle has a combined city/highway rating of 55 MPG. The hybrid’s braking system converts unused kinetic energy into electricity, automatically recharging the battery, so the car never has to be “plugged in.” During driving, the power alternates between the combustion engine and battery power, depending on the need.
The Prius has ample seating capacity for a driver and four adult passengers, a surprising amount of trunk space, and a powerful engine.
“It’s great that this taxi is friendly to both Paul’s wallet and to the environment,” said Yellow Cab President Mike Barnard. “Other cities, including New York and San Francisco have recently introduced hybrids into their fleets. This will be a good test vehicle in our market area to see how well the Prius performs and holds up under heavy taxi use.” Many automobile market analysts agree that hybrids will be the predominant cars in the near future.
